Probus – What is it?
Probus originated in the UK In 1965. The first South Pacific area clubs were formed in New Zealand in 1974, and in Australia in 1976. Probus is now a worldwide movement in 23 countries.
Probus Clubs are for retired or semi-retired people from all walks of life. The movement operates worldwide. Probus operates as a local, national, and international association of retired people who come together in non-political, non-sectarian, non-profit, autonomous clubs which provide regular opportunities for members to meet others in similar circumstances, with similar levels of interest, make new friends, and maintain and expand their interests. Clubs meet regularly for fellowship and an extension of their interests. Clubs are simple in structure and free from the constraints and obligations of service clubs.
Probus is not a service club and does not engage in fund raising or sponsorship. Each Probus club is self-governing required to adhere to a basic set of rules and guidelines of operation in order to preserve their integrity and reputation. While there is no central organisation in other parts of the world, Probus South Pacific Limited acts as the regional headquarters of the Probus organisation in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific.
The word PROBUS is an amalgam of the first three letter of the words PROfessional and BUSiness. Today, there are men’s only, ladies’ only and combined Clubs (men and women as full members).
The Probus philosophy is Fun, Friendship and Fellowship.
